Singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Naponse’s Anishinaabe name is Odemin Kwe, meaning “Strawberry Woman.” Strawberries are known in her culture as the “heart berry,” nourishing the body, mind and spirit, and connecting emotions. Muskrat Magazine finds a perfect reflection of her name in her music calling it: “red-chained, heartfelt and passionate.” Naponse, who describes her sound as Indigenous folk-pop, has won the Northern Lights Festival Boreal Meltdown Competition, performed in the “Northern Showcase” at Folk Music Ontario’s annual conference, as well as at Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrations from Ottawa to Sudbury.
