Fall into the groove of the psychedelic, funk sounds of 1970s Turkey with Altin Gün — an Amsterdam based band touring Canada this summer. The band was inspired and brought together by bassist Jasper Verhulst, who after touring as a member of Jacco Gardner’s band in Istanbul, fell in love with Turkish music from the ‘60s and ‘70s. With their debut album, On, (Bongo Joe Records), the band melds Turkish folk songs with a blend of funk rhythms, wah-wah guitars, and analogue organs. The Amsterdammers who come from various backgrounds –Turkish, but also Indonesian and Dutch– draw inspiration from Turkish artists such as Baris Manço, Selda Bağcan and Erkin Koray. They’ve played everywhere from the Into the Great Wide Open festival in the Netherlands to Istanbul, from Ghent to Geneva and from Ravenna back to Amsterdam again; drawing in audiences across Europe with their unusual combination of familiar sounds.
